You can have it all planned, the wine, the restaurant, the perfect date…until you find out your guest has food allergies. It might not seem like a big issue beforehand but there are a surprising number of us who have put our foot in it by cooking or deciding on a restaurant that our partner can’t enjoy because of food intolerances.
As if there wasn’t enough to worry about when going on the first date, does your hair look good? Do you smell okay? Now food allergies are competing with the best of these reasons to be nervous. But with a careful bit of consideration you can make sure the evening runs smoothly and you’re likely to win a few more brownie points with your date for being so considerate! Who knows, what might have been just a good night kiss can become a lot more if you play your cards right.
But how do you go about ensuring your date’s allergies are taken into account? What you need is a plan. A plan that takes into account what restaurant can handle your dietary needs, knowing if there is a risk of cross contamination of ingredients and how sever their allergies are.
Here is our plan to make sure a date results in a journey back to your apartment rather than a hospital ward.
First of all preparation is key! So investigate your options in advance and be aware of your date’s allergies. The last thing you want to be doing is walking in and out of restaurants until you find one that is suitable. When you are researching these restaurants don’t be afraid to call them and make sure there is something you can eat there. Just remember that the more work and knowledge you have in advance, reduces the stress and awkwardness during the date.
When you have an idea of potential restaurants don’t be afraid to chat with your date about a place that can be mutually enjoyed. After all you want to enjoy yourself too. Suggest restaurants that you visit often and know the menu of or ones that are safer for either of you if you have an allergy. Be smart with suggestions, if you are allergic to dairy then opt for a food style such as Thai that doesn’t tend to have much or any dairy in its menu.
If you or you date has allergies then home cooking can be a daunting proposition. The last thing you want is someone spending an hour in your bathroom after dinner or vice versa. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an evening at home together, the best solution to this is to suggest you both go shopping together and also cook the meal together to ensure no issues arise.
Of course if food allergies are a real problem then one of the best ideas can be to remove food entirely from the equation. Dates don’t always have to revolve around food, instead you can be a lot more creative with ideas or just resort to cocktails.
